What does Dysarthria sound like?
Dysarthria is often described as ‘slurred speech’ but it can be very varied. It affects the clarity of speech, volume, pacing, intonation, nasality and voice. People with dysarthria may be difficult to understand when they speak. They may have no awareness that their speech is unclear. For example, someone with Parkinson’s Disease may not realise they are speaking quietly - to them they feel like they are shouting. We work on improving awareness and reducing effort.
Can Dysarthria improve?
It depends on the reason for the Dysarthria and the type of Dysarthria. Online Speech Therapy for Dysarthria can assist with rehabilitation, strategies and assistive devices for communication - all which enable the person to communicate more effectively.

Below is some general guidance:
Reduce distractions
Reduce background noise - turn off the television or radio.
Look at the person as they talk.
Repeat the words you understand that they are saying by recapping - this supports the conversation to move forward rather than the person having to repeat.
